In a Northwestern University study of 66 countries, the U.S. ranked 39th in the number of women in science majors (43 percent), and 10th from the bottom for its proportion of female scientific researchers (26.6 percent).

When none of the 21 scientists scheduled to speak at a conference on deep brain stimulation were women, a group of female scientists launched a website to collect data on the speaker composition at neuroscience conferences.
